BC health experts offer guidance for back-to-school transitions
Health experts in British Columbia are offering guidance to families as children transition back to school, noting a significant rise in mental health-related emergency department visits. BC Children’s Hospital reported a 37 per cent increase in such visits during September last year compared to August.
Psychiatrist-in-chief Roberto Sassi advises parents to monitor for signs of struggle, such as anxiety, school refusal, changes in eating or sleep patterns, and mood swings. He recommends maintaining open, empathetic communication with children to help build resilience.
Dr. Magdalena Janus, a professor of pediatrics at the University of British Columbia, emphasizes the importance of preparation for kindergarten transitions. Her research suggests that early numeracy and literacy skills can influence long-term academic achievement. To ease the transition, experts suggest familiarizing children with the school environment and commute ahead of time and integrating simple math skills into daily activities.
