BC Highway Patrol launches road safety campaign
The BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) has launched the ‘Drive Relative to Conditions’ campaign to increase road safety as weather conditions change across British Columbia. Throughout October, officers will increase enforcement to target drivers traveling at speeds unsafe for current road, traffic, visibility, or weather conditions.
Authorities emphasize that posted speed limits are designed for ideal conditions. Drivers are legally obligated to slow down during rain, frost, snow, ice, or reduced visibility. In British Columbia, driving too quickly for bad weather or darkness is a Motor Vehicle Act offence that carries a $196 fine.
As temperatures drop, motorists are also reminded of winter preparedness requirements. Beginning October 1, winter tires or chains are required on most B.C. routes. The BCHP is encouraging drivers to ensure headlights, windshield wipers, and brakes are in good working order, and to clear snow and ice from vehicles before travel. Enforcement efforts will be conducted in coordination with partners such as Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement.
