BC Hydro warns of unsafe behavior around electrical infrastructure

BC Hydro is issuing warnings to British Columbians regarding unsafe behavior around electrical infrastructure, noting that safety incidents tend to increase during warmer months. The utility company reported several hazardous activities, including children playing on or using pad-mounted transformers as tables for activities like tea parties, and the construction of play structures near electrical equipment.

In addition to children playing on utility boxes, the company noted that people frequently post signs for bake sales or businesses on power poles, which is prohibited and dangerous. A survey conducted for BC Hydro revealed that nearly 20 per cent of British Columbians are unaware of the dangers of climbing on transformers, despite warning labels. Specific incidents were noted on Vancouver Island and in the Lower Mainland, where equipment had to be cleared of unauthorized structures.
