Inonoaklin Creek fire reaches 597 ha, alerts residents near Highway 6
A lightning‑started wildfire near Inonoaklin Creek was first identified on Saturday, 25 July 2026. The blaze has grown to between 525 and 597 hectares, covering steep, heavy‑timber slopes about 17 km northwest of Needles on the north side of Highway 6.
The Regional District of Central Kootenay issued an evacuation alert for a single property on Lightning Peak Road, advising residents to prepare emergency kits and stay ready to leave, although no mandatory evacuation has been ordered. An area‑restriction also covers several kilometres of the highway’s north side. BC Wildfire Service response includes three helicopters dropping water and retardant, airtankers, dozers, skidders and other heavy equipment. Officials say there are currently no impacts to traffic on Highway 6.
