British Columbia provincial election candidates debate healthcare and economy

As the British Columbia provincial election approaches, candidates are presenting competing visions for the province's future, with healthcare, housing, and the forestry industry serving as central debate topics.

BC NDP Leader David Eby has pledged $30 million to complete the unused sixth floor of the Kelowna General Hospital to expand inpatient capacity. In response, Conservative candidates have criticized the timing of the announcement, noting that the expansion has been a long-standing necessity. Other healthcare proposals include the establishment of dozens of Urgent and Primary Care Centres, a platform shared by both the NDP and the BC Conservatives.

In the Ladysmith-Oceanside riding, BC Green candidate Charlene Smylie proposed a $100 billion investment to create a network of 20 public grocery stores to address food affordability. Meanwhile, in Kootenay-Monashee, OneBC candidate Stephen Hill suggested systemic reforms such as allowing pharmacists to prescribe and renew medications and placing triage nurses in family doctor offices to reduce unnecessary visits.

Economic and environmental issues also feature prominently. Conservative candidate Ward Stamer emphasized rebuilding the forest industry, while candidates in the Juan de Fuca-Malahat region debated transportation infrastructure, specifically regarding Highway 14 congestion and the Throup Road connector.
