BC NDP promises new diagnostic equipment to reduce healthcare wait times
BC NDP Leader David Eby has announced a plan to reduce healthcare wait times by investing in new diagnostic equipment. The proposal includes the addition of eight MRI machines, including one for Eagle Ridge Hospital in Coquitlam, and 10 CT scanners.
If re-elected, the NDP intends to implement coordinated regional surgical waitlists to allow patients to select locations with shorter wait times. The party also plans to continue recruitment campaigns for healthcare workers in the United States to address staffing shortages.
This announcement follows a survey by Consultant Specialists of BC, which indicated that nearly one-quarter of British Columbians are on waitlists for medical specialists, a figure that is reportedly growing by 10 percent annually. Dr. Robert Carruthers, president of the organization, criticized the Health Ministry for using selective statistics that may downplay the extent of the problem.
