BC political parties propose different plans for BC Ferries
As the British Columbia provincial election approaches, major political parties have introduced competing plans to address service concerns regarding BC Ferries.
Premier David Eby and the BC NDP have proposed a pilot program to provide priority ferry reservations for residents of ferry-dependent communities. The plan would set aside 12% of advance reservation space on two specific routes: Horseshoe Bay to Langdale and Little River (Comox) to Westview (Powell River). Under this proposal, 10% of the space would be reserved for locals until four days before sailing, with an additional 2% held until 24 hours before departure. The NDP stated the goal is to ensure essential travel for medical appointments and family visits remains accessible for locals.
Meanwhile, the BC Conservatives, led by Lorne Doerkson, have focused their platform on improving reliability and accountability. Their plan includes the establishment of a BC Ferries Charter intended to set clear standards for on-time performance and sailing capacity.
