B.C. politicians observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

During the British Columbia election campaign, political leaders are observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. NDP Leader David Eby is scheduled to mark the day at the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation. His participation follows recent reports of white nationalist activity at the reserve, where a group reportedly unfurled a banner regarding suspected unmarked graves.

Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak is also expected to attend ceremonies at the reserve’s Powwow Arbour. In response to recent tensions, the First Nations Leadership Council issued a statement condemning white nationalist activity. Additionally, Regional Chief Terry Teegee has called for the Canadian government to classify residential school denialism as hate speech within the Criminal Code.
