BC Rail Corridor Alliance seeks provincial funding and governance

The BC Rail Corridor Alliance, a group comprising government and First Nations representatives, is urging the British Columbia provincial government to take a more active role in preserving the rail corridor between Squamish and Prince George. The movement follows CN Rail’s 2025 announcement that it would end its lease on the former BC Rail corridor between Squamish and 100 Mile House.

During a meeting at the Union of BC Municipalities, alliance members requested $600,000 in funding to conduct an engineering assessment, an economic study, and to provide operations funding. Advocates are seeking a viable, publicly owned rail line capable of transporting both passengers and freight. In addition to funding, the alliance is calling for the province to finalize a governance structure or operator agreement to restore rail service to the region.
