BC SPCA and wildfire victims advocate for pet-friendly housing

The Hayman family, who lost their home in the Bald Range wildfire in August, is calling for increased availability of pet-friendly rental housing. After months of searching, the family is set to reunite in November, but the process highlighted significant barriers for pet owners seeking accommodation.

During their displacement, the family was forced to separate from their pets; while temporary housing accepted their two dogs, the BC SPCA had to provide emergency boarding for their four cats to keep the family together. Erin Hayman, a former landlord, urged property owners to consider pets on a case-by-case basis rather than implementing automatic disqualifications, noting the emotional value pets provide to children and seniors.

Sarah Herring, a Senior Officer of Government Relations for the BC SPCA, noted that evidence suggests tenants with pets do not cause more damage than others.
