BC SPCA opens new animal behaviour centre in Cowichan
The BC SPCA has officially opened the Vancouver Island Animal Behaviour Centre in Cowichan. This specialized facility is designed to provide vulnerable animals with the additional time, space, and behavioural care necessary before they are ready for adoption.
According to BC SPCA CEO Craig Daniell, the centre addresses an increasing need for specialized behavioural support among animals entering the organization’s care. The facility features dedicated indoor and outdoor spaces to offer a calm, predictable, and safe environment for individualized care. Additionally, the centre will function as a provincial training hub, providing BC SPCA staff from across British Columbia with hands-on experience in animal behaviour management.
Kim Monteith, manager of the BC SPCA’s animal behaviour and welfare team, noted that the centre will help animals that struggle with fear or trauma, allowing them to build on their progress in a stable environment rather than facing the stress of frequent transitions.
