BC SPCA rescues abandoned kittens at Cranbrook animal care centre

Staff of the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BC SPCA) discovered a grocery basket containing four nine‑week‑old kittens outside the East Kootenay Community Animal Care Centre in Cranbrook on July 23. The kittens were in good condition but needed permanent homes.

BC SPCA East Kootenay manager Angela Mather said the incident underscores growing pet overpopulation in the area, noting the shelter is currently caring for 59 felines. She urged residents who need to surrender animals to make appointments so staff can prepare and gather health and behavior information, which helps ease the transition for the animals.

The organization also offers a pet food bank and low‑cost spay‑and‑neuter services to support owners facing difficulties, encouraging anyone needing assistance to contact the regional branch.
