BC SPCA Wild ARC rehabilitates 32 orphaned raccoons
The BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC) in Metchosin is currently caring for 32 orphaned raccoons in preparation for their release into the wild. Most of the animals arrived at the facility after their parents were killed in human-related incidents, such as vehicle strikes. Some individuals also required treatment for eye issues or injuries resulting from dog attacks.
Due to the risk of zoonotic diseases, the raccoons are housed in a dedicated facility where staff utilize specialized personal protective equipment. All 32 animals have been vaccinated against canine and feline parvovirus. The rehabilitation process involves intensive care, including bottle-feeding specialized formula up to five times daily for the youngest infants.
As the raccoons mature, they undergo a weaning process that transitions them from a liquid diet to solid foods, including high-protein raw meat, fish, eggs, fruit, and vegetables. To encourage natural foraging behaviors and socialization, staff use puzzle boxes, toys, and outdoor enclosures that simulate a natural environment. The team expects to release the raccoons back into the wild this fall once they reach an optimal weight.
