BC Timber Sales to hold open house on Mount Rose Swanson logging plans
BC Timber Sales (BCTS) will hold an open house on September 10 at the Township of Spallumcheen Municipal Hall to discuss proposed logging activities on Mount Rose Swanson. The agency is proposing a new cut block and road development within the Okanagan-Shuswap natural resource districts.
The plan involves harvesting approximately 14,500 cubic metres of timber across 35.7 hectares, divided into 15 smaller patches. BCTS stated that an estimated 95 per cent of the area's deciduous aspen and cottonwood trees would remain standing. The timber sale licence is expected to be posted in November, with harvesting potentially occurring during the 2026-27 or 2027-28 winter seasons.
The proposal has faced significant opposition. Mount Rose Swanson was designated a sensitive area in 1996 to protect its recreational value and visual quality. An online petition against the logging has garnered 24,000 signatures. In February 2021, the Township of Spallumcheen successfully requested that the Ministry of Forests pause the plans to allow for further consultation, a delay that BCTS claims has now been addressed.
