BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia announced during the board’s 95th Annual General Meeting that the Board of Control for Cricket in India pays approximately INR 3,000 crore in income tax to the central government annually. This disclosure aims to counter the perception that the organization receives tax exemptions or government grants.

The statement comes as the Supreme Court of India seeks clarification on why the BCCI should remain outside the scope of the National Sports Governance Act, 2025. Saikia clarified that the board is not attempting to evade the law but is waiting for cricket to be officially notified as a ‘designated sport’ under the Act. He stated that the BCCI will comply with the new regulations once the necessary official notification is issued.

The board is scheduled to provide further clarification to the Supreme Court during the next hearing on October 27. Additionally, the AGM approved a new four-tier grading system (A, B, C, and D) for umpires and match referees, featuring a performance-based promotion and relegation structure.
