BCEAO warns of counterfeit banknote misinformation in UMOA zone

The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) has issued a warning to the public regarding misinformation circulating on social media about counterfeit banknotes within the West African Monetary Union (UMOA) zone.

The bank addressed videos claiming that fake bills are circulating through money transfer points. The BCEAO noted that some social media posts promote inappropriate identification methods, which could lead to the accidental acceptance of counterfeits or the unjustified refusal of authentic currency. To ensure accuracy, the institution urged citizens to use only the official verification methods detailed in the ‘Banknotes and Coins’ section of the BCEAO website.

The central bank emphasized that it works closely with law enforcement and customs across the eight member states to monitor currency security. Seized counterfeit notes are analyzed by a specialized central bank laboratory to identify counterfeiting techniques and improve future security features. The BCEAO also warned that it reserves the right to pursue legal action against individuals spreading false information intended to undermine confidence in the regional currency.
