Bäckerei Meier expands in Karlsruhe through artisanal methods
Bäckerei Meier, a traditional family-run bakery in Karlsruhe, is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Now managed by third-generation owner Martin Meier, the business has expanded to nine locations, including three recently acquired from the former Bäckerei Reinmuth.
To compete against large-scale industrial bakeries that benefit from mass production, Meier focuses on artisanal methods and high-quality ingredients. The bakery uses regional grain and relies on a 24-hour dough fermentation process to enhance aroma and shelf life.
Despite its expansion, the business faces significant challenges, including rising energy costs, changing consumer behavior, and a decline in interest in traditional craftsmanship.
