BDI opposes suspension of EU emissions trading system

Ahead of the upcoming European Council summit, the Federation of German Industries (BDI) has expressed its opposition to suspending CO2 pricing. BDI Chief Executive Tanja Gönner stated that German industry remains committed to climate goals and the European emissions trading system, describing it as a vital market-based tool for combating global warming.

Gönner argued that calls to abolish the CO2 price primarily benefit companies that are unwilling to undergo industrial transformation. She emphasized that any reform of the emissions trading system must balance competitiveness with CO2 reduction, ensuring that the majority of companies can achieve transformation without disadvantaging those that have already made significant progress.

This stance comes in response to a proposal by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Czech leader Andrej Babis, who suggested a temporary suspension of the emissions trading system to provide immediate cost relief to European industry.

Separately, the Federal Association of Wholesale, Foreign Trade, and Services (BGA) has warned against using protectionism to address economic security. BGA President Dr. Dirk Jandura cautioned that trade barriers and local-content requirements could increase costs and disrupt supply chains rather than creating reliable alternatives.
