Bådteatret stages musical adaptation of Selma Lagerlöf novel

The Bådteatret theater is hosting a production titled ‘Kejserinden’, a musical interpretation of Selma Lagerlöf’s novel ‘The Emperor of Portugallia’. The play, performed by Livingstones Kabinet, explores themes of loss, madness, and the emotional bond between a father and daughter.

Set in 1860s Sweden, the story follows Jan, a poor farmer in Värmland, who descends into madness after his daughter, Klara, moves to Stockholm and fails to return. The production utilizes a metatheatrical approach, featuring actors discussing their various interpretations of the text, including historical, feminist, and Marxist perspectives.

The staging features a set constructed from European pallets and is directed by Nina Kareis. The performance runs until November 13.
