BEAC injects $2.3 billion into CEMAC banking system

The Bank of Central African States (BEAC) has injected approximately $2.3 billion in liquidity into the banking system of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) over a two-week period. The central bank, based in Yaoundé, conducted two major auctions on August 11 and August 18, 2026, to meet sustained refinancing demands from commercial banks in Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, and the Central African Republic.

This shift toward liquidity injection marks a departure from the more restrictive monetary policies observed since 2021, which were aimed at controlling inflation and defending the CFA franc's fixed parity with the euro. The use of short-term open market operations allows the BEAC to manage liquidity without long-term commitments.

In a related discussion regarding regional economic development, economist Justine Judith Lekogo noted that while CEMAC is progressively building the necessary infrastructure and institutions for a regional financial market, the system has yet to become a true engine for economic transformation. Key challenges identified include market depth, savings mobilization, governance, and investor protection.
