Bear attacks reported in Alaska and New Mexico

A hunter from Washington state, Jadon Nicoara, survived a severe bear attack while hunting in a remote area of Alaska. Nicoara was accompanied by his cousin, Daniel, when a bear unexpectedly emerged and attacked him, causing serious facial injuries.

During the encounter, Daniel used a handgun to defend Nicoara, though the bear also attacked him before fleeing. Due to significant blood loss in a remote location, Nicoara recorded a farewell message to his family, fearing he would not survive. Daniel, a physician, managed to control the bleeding, and the pair eventually signaled for help via satellite phone. Nicoara was airlifted to Anchorage for medical treatment.

In a separate incident in New Mexico, a man with disabilities was killed after a bear entered his home in the Navajo Nation community of Crystal. This marked the first fatal bear attack in the state since 2001. Authorities noted that drought and low humidity have increased bear sightings as animals search for food.
