Bear attacks tourist near Lake Towada in Japan

A foreign tourist in his thirties was attacked by a bear near a lookout point at Lake Towada in Japan's Aomori Prefecture on Saturday. The bear bit the man's right arm, but he was transported to a hospital conscious and able to communicate. His nationality has not yet been confirmed.

This incident occurs amid a surge in wildlife encounters across Japan. According to the Ministry of the Environment, there have been six deaths from bear attacks in the country so far this year. The previous fiscal year, which ended in March 2025, saw record-breaking numbers, including over 50,000 sightings, 13 deaths, and 238 injuries.
