Bear behavior and human interaction risks

Research into bear behavior highlights how specific human activities and scents can influence wildlife encounters. Bears possess an extraordinary sense of smell, estimated to be hundreds of times stronger than that of humans, allowing them to detect fermentation and sugary liquids associated with alcoholic beverages from great distances.

Regarding auditory stimuli, the idea that gunshots attract bears is largely considered a myth. While bears have excellent directional hearing and can detect a wide range of frequencies, a sudden loud noise typically triggers a fight-or-flight response. Most bears will choose to flee the area, though defensive reactions may occur if the animal is protecting cubs, a food source, or is injured.
