Bear claws found in 1,400-year-old elite Aestii burials in Kaliningrad

Archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences have discovered brown bear claws in seventh- and sixth-century burials on the Kaliningrad Peninsula. The findings, located in the Zelenogradsky District, were found in seven cremation graves belonging to the Aestii population.

In one specific grave, researchers recovered as many as 12 claws, a discovery described as unprecedented for the region. Because the burials involved cremation, researchers believe that complete bear paws or skins were likely placed on the funeral pyres, as the claws showed signs of exposure to fire but no deliberate modification.

The presence of these remains, alongside weapons, gold and silver jewelry, and sacrificed horses equipped with decorated saddles, suggests the deceased held high social status. While six of the burials belonged to adult men, one was identified as a woman. Researchers indicate these rituals may have been used to demonstrate prestige and may be linked to warrior traditions common in Northern Europe during the early medieval period.
