Bear settles in Saaremaa wildlife area, sparking local excitement

A bear was captured on a trail camera in the Kuressaare hunting area on Saaremaa island in spring 2026, with the first photo taken on 19 May. The animal, estimated to be about three to four years old, has repeatedly moved through the area and visited a feeding site near Länga village.

RMK wildlife specialist Lauri Ellram said the bear is likely a young male migrating from mainland Estonia, where bear numbers have risen to roughly 1 100 individuals, including at least 98 cubs recorded in 2025. Sightings on Saaremaa are rare; previous records include a camera capture in Kuke village in November 2023 and another in Paiküla in April 2025. Bears reach the island by crossing ice in winter or swimming, as the species is a strong swimmer. Authorities advise people to keep a safe distance and avoid feeding or approaching the animal.
