Bear sightings trigger safety warnings in Miyagi and Akita
Authorities in Japan are issuing warnings following multiple bear sightings in Miyagi and Akita prefectures.
In Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, a driver reported seeing a bear approximately one meter in length emerging from bushes onto the Rifu Highway on the morning of September 26. The animal reportedly returned to the brush immediately after appearing on the road. This follows a series of sightings in the nearby city of Shiogama since September 19.
In Odate, Akita Prefecture, officials have issued a specific warning regarding bears that are actively approaching humans near the Goshiki Falls area. Local authorities are advising visitors to avoid the falls and surrounding areas, such as Mt. Tashiro and Lake Goshiki, during the peak excursion season. Residents and workers in the area are encouraged to avoid traveling alone and to carry protective equipment like bear spray.
