Bear Spray: How It Works to Deter Bears and Mountain Lions

Bear spray, also called bear mace, is an aerosol deterrent that uses a high concentration of capsaicinoids—compounds derived from chili peppers—to cause intense irritation of the eyes, nose and throat of aggressive wildlife. When deployed, the pressurised canister projects a cone‑shaped cloud up to 25‑35 feet, temporarily disabling the animal and allowing the user to retreat.

The product is recommended for both bear encounters and mountain‑lion (cougar) threats because the capsaicinoid concentration is higher than that of standard pepper spray for humans. It is non‑lethal, portable, and can be used at a safe distance, making it a preferred safety tool for hikers, campers and park visitors.
