Beate Zschäpe to remain in prison until at least 2035

The Munich Higher Regional Court has ruled that Beate Zschäpe, a convicted member of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) terrorist cell, must remain in custody until at least 2035. The court set a minimum incarceration period of 24 years and denied her request for early release on probation.

Zschäpe, who has been imprisoned since November 2011, was sentenced to life in prison in 2018 for her role in a series of murders committed by the NSU. The group was responsible for ten murders across Germany between 2000 and 2007, targeting nine business owners of Turkish and Greek descent and a German police officer, as well as conducting bombings and robberies.

In its decision, the court noted that Zschäpe has since admitted to having knowledge of nine of the ten murders, a departure from her previous denials. While the court factored this admission into its decision—setting the term at 24 years rather than the 25 years requested by federal prosecutors—it ruled that her actions do not sufficiently offset the extraordinary gravity of her crimes to warrant early release.

The decision is not yet legally binding, as both the defense and federal prosecutors have the right to appeal.
