Beate Zschäpe undergoes hearing regarding potential early release

Beate Zschäpe, a convicted right-wing terrorist and sole survivor of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) trio, has undergone a hearing at the Munich Higher Regional Court regarding her potential early release from prison.

Zschäpe was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2018 for her role in the NSU murder series, which involved ten killings across Germany between 2000 and 2011. The court previously determined there was a ‘special gravity of guilt,’ a designation that typically precludes release after the standard 15-year minimum.

However, because Zschäpe has been in custody since November 2011, the court must soon decide on the minimum period she must remain in prison. Her lawyer, Mathias Grasel, argued for a total sentence of no more than 20 years. The hearing, which lasted approximately ninety minutes, was held in a non-public session to prepare the court's decision.
