Beatriz Eugenia Vélez appointed president of Colpensiones

Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella has appointed Beatriz Eugenia Vélez Vengoechea as the new president of Colpensiones. Vélez, an attorney with over 30 years of experience in social security, labor law, and risk management, succeeds Carlos René Montoya Muñoz.

Montoya’s tenure was brief, lasting only three days before his resignation was requested by the President. His departure followed a Senate Seventh Commission hearing where he reportedly struggled to provide precise answers regarding the entity’s budget, operations, and the challenges facing the pension system.

Vélez has been tasked with ensuring timely pension payments, protecting affiliate resources, and improving user service. The President also instructed her to identify and report any irregularities or illegalities from the previous administration to the authorities. The leadership change occurs amid discussions regarding the 2027 budget and efforts to address financial gaps in pension disbursements.
