Beatriz Muñiz identified as the 'La Pedriza mummy

The identity of the woman known for two decades as the 'mummy of La Pedriza' has been confirmed as Beatriz Muñiz. The mummified remains were discovered by children hiking in a sinkhole in the La Pedriza mountain area of Madrid approximately six months after her death in 2006.

For twenty years, her family in Pravia, Asturias, believed she had left home voluntarily to start a new life. This belief, stemming from her independent nature and a period of behavioral changes prior to her disappearance, prevented them from filing a formal missing person report at the time.

The mystery was finally resolved in 2025 when a disappearance report allowed authorities to link the remains to Muñiz. Before her disappearance, the humanities student had traveled from Seville to Asturias, where she had begun distancing herself from friends and changing her social patterns.
