Beaumont Street CCTV project stalled by funding dispute

A funding dispute has stalled plans to install CCTV on Beaumont Street in Hamilton, Newcastle, following reports of violence and antisocial behaviour. Newcastle Liberal councillor Jenny Barrie has accused MP Tim Crakanthorp and the state government of failing to deliver necessary grants to secure the area.

Mr Crakanthorp stated that a previous application by the Hamilton Business Improvement Association to the Active Regional Communities package was unsuccessful, despite his letter of support. He noted he is advocating to Police Minister Yasmin Catley to secure appropriate funding.

The area has faced significant safety concerns, including attempted break-ins and public disturbances. In November 2024, 22-year-old James Callahan was killed in an alleged ambush on Beaumont Street, prompting public pleas for increased surveillance.
