Beauty experts share techniques for modern makeup application

Current beauty trends are shifting away from the heavy, carved-out aesthetics of the 2010s toward more subtle, natural looks. Professional makeup artists suggest specific techniques for achieving these modern finishes.

For eye shadow, experts recommend prepping the eyelids with micellar water to remove skincare residue, which can cause pigment to shift. Applying a waterproof gel-set pencil or a cream eye base can help lock the shadow in place. Techniques in shadow application can also alter perceived eye shapes; for instance, focusing color on the outer corners can create an almond shape, while concentrating it in the center can make eyes appear more rounded.

In facial sculpting, the use of cream bronzer is rising as an alternative to traditional contouring. While contouring typically uses cooler tones to mimic shadows, bronzer uses warmer tones to simulate sun exposure. Many modern artists now utilize neutral-toned bronzers that serve both purposes, allowing for a more balanced and effortless appearance.
