Beauty industry spending hits $108 billion amid rising consumer debt

The beauty industry is experiencing massive growth, with Americans spending over $108 billion on beauty products last year. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram drive significant engagement, with beauty-related content reaching hundreds of millions of views. This surge has led to increased spending across both high-end and drugstore brands.

However, this boom has created a “beauty debt trap.” One in four Gen Z and millennial shoppers report going into debt to purchase beauty products. To combat overspending, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests focusing on simple, science-backed routines, such as using broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and prioritizing active ingredients over marketing hype.

Parallel to consumer spending trends, there is a growing market for at-home skincare technology. Manufacturers are increasingly providing specialized services to develop, design, and produce electronic or mechanical beauty devices for home use, catering to brands ranging from established names to new startups.
