United Kingdom bans gel nail polish containing TPO

Authorities in England, Scotland, and Wales have implemented a ban on the sale of gel nail polishes containing trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), effective August 15. The restriction follows scientific concerns that TPO acts as a hormone disruptor and may impact human fertility.

The ban aligns the United Kingdom with regulations previously established by the European Union. While manufacturers and distributors are prohibited from selling new products containing the substance, nail salons are permitted to use their existing stock. Retailers have until February 14, 2027, to sell through remaining inventory before a complete ban on the cosmetic industry takes effect.

Notably, TPO remains permitted for use in dentistry, where it is used in small quantities as a photostarter for dental fillings and whitening treatments. Industry experts suggest that TPO-free alternatives are already available and will become the standard for manicures.
