Beavers in West London restore flood‑prone site

Conservationists in Ealing, West London, reintroduced a family of wild beavers to the 24‑acre Paradise Fields site in 2023 as a nature‑based flood‑control measure. By the second winter the area experienced its first flood‑free stretch in a decade, and the beaver colony, now eight strong with kits born in spring, has created wetlands that store water, reduce runoff and support birds, butterflies, bats, fish and freshwater shrimp.

Project leader Sean McCormack explained the approach as an alternative to conventional concrete infrastructure, noting that beaver dams act like natural reservoirs. Experts such as Emily Fairfax highlighted how beaver canals disperse water across valley bottoms, while George Holmes cautioned that beavers are not a universal fix and require careful planning to avoid unintended damage. Local residents have embraced the animals, with children spotting dams after school and community “beaver safaris” becoming a feature of the neighbourhood.

The initiative illustrates growing interest in wildlife‑based solutions to urban flood risk as climate change intensifies storm events.
