Beavers transform regenerative agriculture site in Colorado

Beavers have had a transformative impact on a regenerative agriculture testing ground near Aspen, Colorado, according to Eden Vardy of The Farm Collaborative. Since their return three years ago, the animals have significantly increased the water table and stimulated growth in riparian areas.

Despite exceptional drought conditions in Pitkin County and the north-central Colorado mountains caused by low snowpack and extreme heat, the beaver-developed storage systems provided two additional months of water beyond initial expectations. This highlights the role of beavers as keystone species and ecosystem engineers capable of increasing drought resiliency.

In response to the growing recognition of these benefits, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has implemented strategies for species conservation and management, including the recent release of beavers into state wildlife areas near Rifle to restore riparian ecosystems.
