Beavers used for flood management in England
Local governments across England are increasingly utilizing beavers as a biological alternative to traditional concrete flood infrastructure. Through rewilding projects in areas such as London and Dorset, these semi-aquatic rodents are creating self-repairing natural dams.
These dams function by slowing the flow of rushing water and directing it into the surrounding soil, which creates sponge-like wetlands capable of absorbing significant amounts of excess rainwater. This process helps prevent sudden storm surges from overwhelming downstream areas, offering a more flexible and effective solution than rigid, expensive underground drainage systems and cement-lined riverbanks.
