Poland healthcare sector faces salary caps and funding disputes
Poland's healthcare sector is undergoing significant structural and financial shifts. The Ministry of Health has proposed new salary limits for medical professionals, suggesting a maximum monthly gross wage of approximately 58,000 PLN for a standard position, potentially reaching 76,896 PLN for those working two full-time equivalents. Exceptions may apply for management and specialists like transplantologists.
Financial tensions persist within the system. In Ostrołęka, the hospital director reported that while basic salaries are paid, funds for services performed beyond the National Health Fund (NFZ) plans—amounting to several million PLN—remain unsettled. Similarly, in Lębork, public discussion has intensified following reports that doctor salaries accounted for nearly 28% of the hospital's budget.
On the infrastructure front, several facilities are modernizing. A hospital in Bełchatów has completed renovations of its primary care clinics using EU funds, while the University Hospital in Zielona Góra is investing nearly 18 million PLN in cardiology and clinical research. Additionally, the University Hospital in Kalisz is undergoing a 14.7 million PLN digital transformation supported by the National Recovery Plan.
Patient services are also evolving, with the introduction of the electronic oncology diagnostic card (e-DiLO) to streamline cancer treatment, and local initiatives like mobile eye clinics in Pogorzela.
