Bechtel chosen as delivery partner for Australia’s $90bn high‑speed rail project
Global construction firm Bechtel has been appointed as the delivery partner for the development phase of Australia’s proposed high‑speed rail linking Newcastle and Sydney, a project valued at about $90 billion. The development stage, estimated to last two years, will be overseen by the High Speed Rail Authority and, if the federal government proceeds, the Newcastle‑Sydney line could become operational by 2039, with an extension to Western Sydney International Airport slated for 2042.
The planned route includes stations at Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, the Central Coast, Sydney Central, Parramatta and the new airport. Infrastructure Australia’s business case estimates a return of 80 cents to one dollar for every dollar spent, citing expected gains in connectivity, population and housing growth, productivity and contributions to net‑zero emissions targets. Bechtel’s managing director, Richard Freer, highlighted the firm’s 70‑year rail experience and its role in delivering the $5.3 billion Western Sydney Airport project.
