Beckhoff's H2PowerCube and Romania's expanding battery farms aim to stabilize renewable power
Beckhoff demonstrated the H2PowerCube, a containerised energy unit that combines an electrolyser, a fuel‑cell and a battery storage system under a Beckhoff PC‑based controller. Each container can host up to 24 electrolyser modules delivering about 1.2 MW, with modular hardware and software that can be expanded and enhanced by AI‑driven predictive maintenance. The solution is pitched for hydrogen‑refueling stations, industrial micro‑grids and other decentralised power applications, helping to balance fluctuating renewable generation.
In Romania, total installed battery‑storage capacity has risen above 1.6 GW, but analysts say at least 3–3.5 GW is needed to offset the country’s solar and wind surplus during periods of low demand. Ongoing projects include a 200 MW plant in Mireasa, while EU recovery funds earmark roughly €80 million for further storage investments. Current costs are estimated at €180‑250 per kWh of stored capacity, making each 100 MWh installation cost €1.8‑2.5 million.
