Becky Sauerbrunn joins Portland Thorns as technical consultant

Becky Sauerbrunn, a two-time Women’s World Cup winner and NWSL legend, is returning to the Portland Thorns as a technical consultant for the remainder of the 2026 season. Following her retirement from professional play in 2024, Sauerbrunn will transition from the pitch to a multifaceted support role.

In her new capacity, Sauerbrunn intends to work closely with the defensive line, provide tactical insights to the coaching staff, and serve as a mentor for players. She noted that her role includes a leadership component, aiming to provide a veteran voice within the team ecosystem following the retirements of other prominent players.

Sauerbrunn’s career includes 189 NWSL appearances, four Defender of the Year awards, and three league titles. She previously played for FC Kansas City and the Utah Royals before joining the Thorns in 2020, where she helped secure the 2022 NWSL Championship.
