Becton Dickinson announces $19 billion U.S. investment plan
Becton Dickinson (BD) has announced a $19 billion investment plan in the United States aimed at strengthening domestic healthcare supply chains. A central component of this commitment is a $3 billion allocation specifically for expanding domestic manufacturing capacity.
The initiative seeks to increase the production of essential medical consumables by approximately 5 billion units annually, which would raise the company’s domestic supply share for these products to nearly 80%. Additionally, BD plans to manufacture 100% of the needles required for the U.S. market domestically, utilizing American-made steel.
The agreement with the U.S. government is designed to bolster emergency preparedness and reduce reliance on overseas supply chains. As part of the arrangement, BD may receive relief or exemptions from certain future Section 232 tariffs on medical products and inputs, contingent upon the company meeting specific investment and manufacturing milestones.
