Bed Bug Infestations Spur PCR Testing and Travel Luggage Precautions

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are fast‑spreading blood‑sucking parasites that can move from hotels or other accommodations into personal belongings. The German Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) warns that a single fertilised female carried in luggage can establish a household infestation. Signs of a possible infestation include itchy, red bite lesions, black fecal specks, shed skins and occasional tiny blood stains on bedding or clothing. Because early infestations are hard to detect visually, a laboratory PCR test can confirm the presence of bed‑bug DNA. Travelers are advised to inspect suitcases and clothing at the destination, focusing on seams, folds and hidden spots such as picture frames, light switches, wallpaper and baseboards. Removing or isolating luggage away from beds and furniture can reduce the risk of transport. Prompt professional treatment is recommended if an infestation is confirmed, as bed bugs can survive for months and reproduce quickly.
