Bedbug infestations and insect bite management

Experts are warning of the increasing prevalence of bedbugs in homes and during travel. These small, reddish-brown insects feed on human blood and often go unnoticed because their bites may not cause an immediate reaction. However, infestations can lead to significant health issues, such as anemia from prolonged blood loss. While there is no clear evidence of direct human-to-human disease transmission, recent 2023 research suggests bedbugs could potentially carry and transmit MRSA infections.

To prevent infestations, experts recommend inspecting hotel bedding before unpacking and avoiding placing luggage on beds or floors. Upon returning from travel, clothing should be immediately washed and dried. For those already facing an infestation, professionals advise against the random use of chemicals due to potential insecticidal resistance, suggesting instead methods like silicate dust or controlled dry heat.

For managing the itching and swelling caused by insect bites, such as those from mosquitoes or bees, a homemade paste of baking soda and water can provide relief. This mixture should be applied to the site for approximately ten minutes before being rinsed off. However, medical attention should be sought immediately for stings from wasps or hornets, or if allergic symptoms like difficulty breathing or dizziness occur.
