Bedbug infestations increase amid concerns over MRSA transmission
Bedbug infestations are on the rise, particularly during the summer months. While these reddish-brown insects are known for causing sleep disruption and itchy welts, scientists are raising concerns about potential health risks beyond simple bites.
Researchers, including those from the University of South Dakota, have demonstrated that bedbugs may be capable of spreading MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant infection. Experiments using blood capsules and artificial skin showed that the pests could acquire the superbug during one feeding and transmit it during a subsequent feeding.
Public concern regarding bedbugs has previously led to significant disruptions, such as in 2018 when New York City removed several municipal buses from service, and in 2023 when sightings in Paris prompted alarm ahead of the Olympic Games. Experts warn that the pests are easily transported into homes via clothing, linens, and furniture.
