Bedbug infestations surge across UK as pests develop pesticide resistance

The United Kingdom is experiencing a significant rise in bedbug infestations, with experts warning that the pests are developing resistance to commonly used pesticides. Monitoring firms report that infestations in major European cities have increased by 20 to 25 percent annually.

In London, the issue has moved beyond residential areas into commercial spaces. The Guardian's King's Cross offices recently required staff to work remotely due to sightings, and the rail operator Southeastern had to remove trains from service after bedbugs were found in drivers' cabs.

Pest control professionals report a sharp increase in demand. JG Pest Control notes that London is a major hotspot, while Rentokil has seen inquiries from commercial clients, such as hotels, rise by more than 40 percent over the last two years.

Experts note that while bedbugs do not transmit known diseases, they cause significant physical and psychological distress through itching and insomnia. Traditional DIY chemical treatments, such as supermarket sprays, are often ineffective because the insects have developed resistance to pyrethroid insecticides, allowing them to retreat deeper into furniture and cracks.
