Bedding hygiene and its impact on respiratory health
Maintaining bedding hygiene is critical for sleep quality and respiratory health, as mattresses, pillows, and sheets can become breeding grounds for microorganisms. Human biological waste, including up to one liter of sweat per night and approximately 1 to 1.5 grams of dead skin cells daily, provides a nutrient-rich environment for dust mites, bacteria, and yeast.
Research from the University of Manchester highlights that pillows can act as closed biotopes where fungi develop by feeding on dust mite excrement. This is particularly significant for individuals with asthma or sinusitis, as the proximity of pillows to the airways increases exposure to fungal products and allergens.
Following periods of high heat, such as summer heatwaves, the proliferation of these organisms can reach annual peaks. Regular washing of bedding is recommended to mitigate risks of skin irritations, dermatitis, eczema, and respiratory issues caused by the accumulation of allergens.
