Bedding maintenance: Tips for sheet orientation and odor prevention

Household experts have shared tips for managing bedding, focusing on both the assembly of sheets and the prevention of unpleasant odors.

To simplify the process of making a bed, the ‘smart corner’ hack suggests using the care label located inside fitted sheets as a guide to identify the correct orientation of the fabric. This helps users distinguish between the long and short sides of the sheet.

Regarding hygiene, infection prevention expert Dr. Shanina C. Knighton explains that a sour or urine-like smell in freshly washed sheets is often caused by bacteria multiplying in damp fabric. Because washing does not sterilize, surviving bacteria can break down residual skin oils, sweat, and detergent. If sheets remain damp due to improper drying, humidity, or being left in a washing machine too long, they can develop a persistent odor.
