Bedford Council picks Cityheart to redevelop former Debenhams site

Bedford Borough Council has chosen Cityheart as the preferred development partner for the Mayes Yard project, which will transform the former Debenhams building on Bedford High Street and Silver Street. The council aims to create a vibrant mixed‑use destination with new shops, restaurants, leisure facilities and improved public spaces. Plans may also include a new central library, enhanced cultural facilities around the Corn Exchange and better walking routes linking parts of the town centre. The redevelopment follows a competitive selection process and is part of a broader effort to revitalize Bedford’s town centre and attract visitors and residents alike.

The council emphasised that the project will be shaped with input from local residents, businesses and community groups, and that the partnership with Cityheart leverages the developer’s experience delivering major regeneration schemes across the country.
